I have had numerous people come up to me and ask what it takes to lose weight permanently. I think the reason for this is that I used to be significantly overweight, dropped more than 100 pounds and have kept it off for 10 years. The answer for me is always the same, and that is to change one's lifestyle, but of course, that is much easier said than done. So I thought of a way to address the issue as clearly as possible and break it down into separate parts.
First and foremost, to lose weight, one has to change the way they think about food. For many of us, meals were an event, an opportunity to enjoy something that provided so much joy to us that we lost sight of its real purpose. Food is fuel and nothing more. Sure, a lot of it tastes good, but it is important for all of us to remember we eat to live, and should never live to eat. It is not a good idea to fantasize about food and it is important to learn and understand what all is entailed in a balanced diet.
The second thing I would suggest to lose weight is that you incorporate exercise into your life on a daily basis. It may be difficult at first, when you are out of shape, but it gets easier. The most important thing at the beginning is quantity, not quality. Try not to worry so much about whether or not you are doing an exercise properly or how you look doing it; just do it! The fact of the matter is that it is far more important, early on, to get into the habit of working out rather than worrying about doing it properly.
The third and final thing I suggest to lose weight is to make sure you are getting plenty of sleep. The fact is that sleep is very important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle in so many ways. When you are probably restored in the morning, you have more energy to work out and you don't tend to get sick as often. You also burns calories when you are sleeping, so getting enough of it is a pretty good work out in and of itself. It seems easy to do, but make sure you are actually getting enough sleep each night.
These are three things that I found help a person to lose weight when they are feeling a little on the heavy side. This may all sound pretty basic, but sometimes people try to over-think things and it ends up hurting them in the end. The solution is simple if you are serious about it.
