This has been among one the hottest debates for past few years. On the pro side, counting calories can be very helpful, as it allows people to eat without actually putting them on diet but yet ensures a significant loss in weight over a period of time. However, counting calories is not the only wholesome solution, as weight loss should encompass a mixed solution: healthy diet, daily exercises, and drinking lots and lots of water. So, it is just not the calories that count; but it is also your lifestyle and diet that have a say in your weight loss program. After all, your body needs the right kinds of foods along with the right lifestyle; for instance, there is no point in eating ice-creams and cakes regularly if you have a sedentary lifestyle.
Although counting calories is great, the con side is that it can trigger obsession to such an extent that people can deprive themselves of vital nutrients. It can also, and is most likely to become so tedious that you will never continue to do so in the long run. General indications are that very rarely do people maintain counting calories. They do so for short periods of time and either gives up because they can't do it anymore, or achieve their goals and simply go back to eating unhealthy and keep repeating the cycle.
To avoid this obsession, consider combining calorie counting with foods that consume more calories. There are foods such as high-fiber foods that need more energy to metabolize are better for those who live a sedentary lifestyle. You could also replace high calorie food choices with lower calorie versions. An example of this would be to replace your regular milk with skim milk, or to go even further, with Almond Milk. Almond milk benefits are not widely known but it packs the one two punch of being low calorie and very healthy.
Further, combine calorie counting with smaller lower levels of fat intake. The rule is simple: More fat means more calories. A prime example are eggs, whole eggs contain lots of fat from the yolk, but if you make your omelet with multi egg whites instead the end result would be a lot less fat ( and the calories in egg whites are much lower). Lastly, choose the right food before counting the calories. Right means nutritious and it refers to fruits, whole grains, and vegetables. Just follow these three ideas and there will be no need of counting calories.
