Nothing is more detrimental to a diet plan than midnight snacks. Sitting at home, nothing to do but watch TV, and sure enough, that bag of potato chips comes calling. It happens to the bet of us.

There are two things we can do to not let this affect our weight loss goals. Either find a way to stop it, or find snacks that will actually help us lose weight.

If you know you are going to fall into this trap, then make sure you integrate it into your plan, so the calories are accounted for. That way, you are not adding on to your total intake for the day. If that snack is going to put you over your plan's requirements, then you are going to hit a road block and bring the weight loss to a halt.

So, you have planned and you have set aside the calories so you can pick up that midnight snack? Then you must find the right thing to eat. Potato chips will not do the trick. You want fat burning foods, the kind that will not add on the pounds, but actually help you burn more away.

These suggestions will help you stay on track:

Egg Whites

Separating eggs is a pain, but only takes a few minutes. Only a few minutes more to scramble the egg whites up. This is light and loaded with protein, so it won't sit in your stomach like a lump. Sprinkle on a little hot sauce for some flavor. The final tally is about 150-200 calories.

Greek Yogurt and Flaxseeds

This is a very healthy snack and will give you a nice balance of protein, carbs, and some healthy fats. Combined they will help keep your system stable as you sleep. Greek yogurt has almost double the protein and half the sodium of regular yogurt, which makes it a nice choice and flaxseeds are great for digestion. A Cup of Greek yogurt and about 2 tbsp of flaxseeds will get you in again at about 200 calories.

Celery Sticks and Peanut Butter

A great snack to have before calling it a night. Peanut butter is a great source of protein and healthy fats, while celery is loaded with fiber and has almost no calories to speak of. They taste great together too! Have a few celery stalks dipped in peanut butter as you go and it will only cost you about 150 calories.

Cottage Cheese with Peanut Butter

Ok, this one sounds a little nasty, which is why I left it for last, but it is really not that bad. Cottage cheese is very healthy, as the protein it delivers takes hour to digest, delivering a steady flow of amino acids to your muscles. This is great for those who workout and lift weights on a regular basis. The peanut butter slows the digestion down even more, so when you wake up, you won't feel overly hungry.

This is enough to get you off on a good start. There are many more healthy foods and combinations you can snack on, so use your imagination. If you plan for snacking, it won't kill your diet, and you won't feel like you are sacrificing so much. Make this part of your diet plan, along with exercise and proper supplements and you will stay on track to reaching your goals.
